Car
If you are traveling by car, head towards the Zao area in Miyagi Prefecture. From Sendai, take the Tohoku Expressway towards Yamagata. Exit at the Zao IC (Interchange) and follow the signs towards Zao Onsen. Once you reach Zao Onsen, continue on Route 2 for about 10 km until you arrive at the parking area for Okama. Note that parking may incur a fee, typically around 500 yen. After parking, you will need to hike approximately 1 km to reach Okama, which is a crater lake known for its stunning emerald color.
Public Transportation
To reach Okama using public transportation, take the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo to Sendai. From Sendai Station, transfer to the JR Senzan Line and take a train to Yamagata Station. Once at Yamagata Station, take the Yamagata City Bus bound for Zao Onsen. The bus ride will take approximately 40 minutes. Get off at the Zao Onsen stop. From there, you will need to hike about 1 km to reach Okama. Be sure to check the bus schedule in advance, as service may be limited, especially during off-peak seasons.
