Discover more about Hijiri Bridge

Hijiri Bridge (聖橋, Hijiri-bashi), meaning 'Sacred Bridge,' is a notable landmark in Tokyo, gracefully arching over the Kanda River. Completed in 1927 as part of the city's reconstruction following the devastating Great Kanto Earthquake, the bridge was designed by Mamoru Yamada, who was influenced by German Expressionism. The bridge's name derives from its connection of two religious sanctuaries: the Holy Resurrection Cathedral (also known as Nikolai-do) to the south and the Yushima Seido Confucian temple to the north. This symbolic link contributes to the bridge's unique character and cultural significance. Measuring 92 meters in length and 22 meters in width, Hijiri Bridge is the longest bridge on the Kanda River. Its impressive arches have become an iconic sight in Tokyo, even serving as a model for the Otonashi Bridge in Kita Ward. The bridge is a popular spot for photographers and railway enthusiasts, offering a vantage point to capture the dynamic intersection of three subway lines.
