Sankeien Garden: A Journey Through Time

Sankeien Garden, a 175,000 square meter Japanese garden in Yokohama, is more than just a park; it's a living museum. Founded by Tomitaro Hara (1868-1939), a wealthy silk trader also known as Sankei Hara, the garden showcases 17 historical structures relocated from various locations across Japan, including Kyoto and Kamakura. Ten of these structures are designated as Important Cultural Properties, offering visitors a unique glimpse into different periods of Japanese history and architectural styles. The garden is divided into two main areas: the Outer Garden, which opened to the public in 1906, and the Inner Garden, which was initially Hara's private garden and opened in 1958. The Outer Garden features a spacious landscape with seasonal blossoms and trees, highlighted by the iconic three-story pagoda relocated from the former Tomyo-ji Temple in Kyoto. The Inner Garden offers a more intimate setting with meticulously arranged historical structures, including the Rinshunkaku villa, known for its exquisite design. As you stroll through Sankeien, you'll encounter bridges, streams, waterfalls, bamboo groves, and ponds, creating a harmonious blend of nature and history. Key highlights include the Main Hall of Old Tomyo-ji Temple, the Former Yanohara Family Residence (a traditional thatched-roof farmhouse), and the Rinshunkaku villa, once owned by the Kii branch of the Tokugawa family. The garden is also renowned for its seasonal beauty, with cherry blossoms in spring, lotus flowers in summer, colorful foliage in autumn, and serene snowy landscapes in winter. Sankeien was heavily damaged during World War II but was later donated to the City of Yokohama in 1953. After extensive restoration, it reopened to the public and was designated a Place of Scenic Beauty in 2007. Today, Sankeien continues to be a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike, offering a tranquil escape and a chance to appreciate Japan's rich cultural heritage.
