Kinkaku-ji: The Golden Pavilion of Kyoto

Getting There

• Car

  Start your journey in Tosa by heading north on Route 56 (Kochi Highway) towards Kochi City. Continue for approximately 17 kilometers until you reach the Kochi IC (Interchange). Take the exit and merge onto Route 32. Follow Route 32 for about 25 kilometers until you reach the town of Nankoku. From Nankoku, take Route 33 towards Takamatsu. After about 30 kilometers, you will see signs for Kyoto. Follow the signs to Kyoto, and merge onto the Meishin Expressway. After about 80 kilometers, take the exit for Kyoto and follow signs for Kinkaku-ji, which is located at 1 Kinkakujicho, Kita Ward, Kyoto. There is parking available at Kinkaku-ji, but note that there may be a parking fee (typically around 500 yen).

• Public Transportation

  To reach Kinkaku-ji using public transportation, first take a local train from Tosa to Kochi Station. The train ride takes about 30 minutes. From Kochi Station, take the JR Dosan Line to Takamatsu Station (approximately 1 hour). From Takamatsu Station, transfer to a bus bound for Kinkaku-ji. The bus ride will take about 1 hour. Make sure to check the bus schedule as it may vary. The total cost of this trip will be around 1,500 yen for the train and bus rides combined. Once you arrive at the Kinkaku-ji bus stop, it's a short walk to the entrance of the temple.

• Taxi

  For a more direct option, consider taking a taxi from Tosa to Kinkaku-ji. Taxis can be booked at your hotel or hailed on the street. The trip will take approximately 1.5 hours, depending on traffic, and will cost around 15,000 to 20,000 yen. This is the most convenient option if you are traveling with a group or have a lot of luggage.
