Sotomo Arch: A Coastal Masterpiece

Sotomo Arch, also known as Sotomo Caves and Cliffs, is a breathtaking coastal area located on the Uchitomi Peninsula in Obama, Fukui Prefecture. This scenic six-kilometer stretch of coastline boasts dramatic rock formations, sharp cliffs, and natural arches carved by the powerful waves of the Sea of Japan. The name 'Sotomo' was originally used by local fishermen to describe the exterior surface or back surface of the land. Over centuries, the relentless action of the ocean has sculpted the granite cliffs into magnificent stone arches, including the iconic Daimon (Large Gate) and Shomon (Small Gate), which are wide enough for boats to pass through. Other notable rock formations include Kama-no-Koshi, resembling the Moai statues of Easter Island, Meotokame Rock, which looks like two turtles, and Karabune Island, shaped like a boat. The best way to experience Sotomo Arch is by taking a 50 to 60-minute pleasure boat cruise from Wakasa Fisherman's Wharf. These cruises operate daily from March to November, offering close-up views of the arches, sea caves, and other unique rock formations.
