Discover more about Maruoka Castle

Maruoka Castle, gracefully situated on a small hill in Sakai, Fukui Prefecture, is a significant cultural and historical site. Constructed in 1576 by Shibata Katsutoyo, the castle is famed as one of Japan's twelve remaining original castle keeps. Its nickname, 'Mist Castle' (Kasumi-ga-jo), originates from a legend where a thick mist would conceal the castle from approaching enemies. The castle's keep features a simple yet sturdy design, reflective of the Warring States period. Visitors can explore the interior, which houses information displays and a diorama. A climb up the steep wooden stairs, aided by ropes, rewards visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding plains. The castle grounds also include a museum displaying arms, armor, and household items related to the castle's former lords. Maruoka Castle is particularly renowned for its cherry blossoms, with over 400 trees that bloom in early to mid-April. During the Maruoka-jo Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival), the trees are illuminated at night, creating a magical atmosphere. The castle was once destroyed during the Fukui earthquake in 1948, but was later restored using over 70% of the original materials.
