Discover more about Ichijōdani Asakura Ruins

The Ichijōdani Asakura Clan Ruins are located in Fukui Prefecture and offer a captivating journey into Japan's feudal past. This historic site was once a bustling castle town, serving as the heart of the Asakura clan's power for over a century. The town flourished during the Muromachi Period (1336-1573) as a cultural, military, and commercial hub, with a population exceeding 10,000. In 1573, Oda Nobunaga razed Ichijōdani to the ground, bringing an end to the Asakura clan's reign. The ruins remained untouched for nearly 400 years until excavations began in 1967, revealing the town's layout, including samurai residences, merchant homes, temples, and gardens. Today, visitors can explore the partially reconstructed town, which includes restored homes and streets that offer a glimpse into life during the Muromachi Period. The site also features the foundations of the Asakura Lord's residence and several meticulously restored gardens. The Ichijodani Asakura Family Site Museum, opened in 2022, displays artifacts recovered from the ruins and provides historical context. Key features of the site include the reconstructed street with furnished samurai and merchant houses, the ruins of the Asakura Lord's residence, and the beautiful Japanese gardens. Visitors can also hike up to the site of Ichijodani Castle for panoramic views of the valley. The Ichijodani Asakura Family Site Museum enhances the experience with interactive exhibits and detailed artifacts.
