Discover more about Fukoji Temple

Fukoji Temple, located in Bungoono, Oita Prefecture, offers a serene and mystical experience for visitors. The temple's history stretches back to 583 AD, during the Asuka period, when Buddhism was gaining popularity in Japan. Founded by Nichira, who served the ancient Korean Baekje kingdom, the temple has long been a training ground for esoteric Buddhist practices. The temple's most striking feature is the 11.3-meter-tall cliff-carved statue of Fudo Myo-o, a colossal magaibutsu (stone Buddha carved into a rock surface). Carved in the 13th century, it is considered one of the largest of its kind in Japan and is a designated Historic Site by the Oita Prefecture. The statue is flanked by his servants Kimkara and Cetaka. The soft, gentle expression of Fudo-myo'o is attributed to the Aso-3 ignimbrite, a delicate rock formed from pyroclastic flow. Fukoji Temple is also known as the “Hydrangea Temple”. Around June, the temple grounds come alive with approximately 2,000 bigleaf hydrangea plants in bloom. The hydrangeas are said to be planted for the fallen of past wars. Visitors can explore the various shrines and altars within the complex, each contributing to the rich tapestry of Buddhist history. The temple is not overly crowded, allowing for a more intimate experience where one can meditate or simply enjoy the surrounding beauty at a leisurely pace.
