Getting There

• Car

  From the main entrance of Charyn Canyon, head southeast on the main road. Continue on the A2 road towards Aktogay for approximately 50 kilometers. Once you reach the town of Aktogay, look for the signs directing you to Black Canyon, which is about 15 kilometers south of the town center. The road to Black Canyon is a dirt road, so drive carefully. There is no entrance fee for Black Canyon, but ensure you have enough fuel before departing as services are limited in the area.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Black Canyon via public transport, you can take a minibus (marshrutka) from the main bus station in Charyn Canyon to the town of Aktogay. The journey typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, and the fare is around 1000 KZT (approximately $2.50). Once you arrive in Aktogay, you will need to hire a taxi or arrange a local ride to Black Canyon, which is about 15 kilometers away. Taxi fares may vary, but expect to pay around 3000 KZT (approximately $7.50) for the trip.

• Hiking

  For the adventurous, you can hike to Black Canyon from Charyn Canyon. This hike is not for the faint of heart, as it takes about 4 to 5 hours over rough terrain. Start from the main visitor area of Charyn Canyon and head south towards the hills. Use a map or GPS to navigate, as trails can be unclear. Carry sufficient water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the way. This option is free, but be prepared for the physical challenge.
