Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Almaty, the nearest major city to Kimasar Pass. Head southeast on Al-Farabi Avenue (A2) towards Medeu District. Continue on the road for approximately 25 kilometers. Take a left turn onto the road leading to Kimasar Pass, which is well-marked. The drive will take you through scenic landscapes, and you may encounter some gravel roads as you approach the pass, so a vehicle with good clearance is recommended.
Public Transportation
From Almaty, you can take a bus or a minibus (marshrutka) heading towards Medeu. Buses depart from the Sayran Bus Station. Once you reach Medeu, you may need to hire a taxi or arrange for a local guide who can take you to Kimasar Pass, as public transport options are limited in this area. Expect the taxi fare to be around 2,000 to 3,000 KZT, depending on your negotiation skills.
Hiking
For adventurous travelers, consider hiking to Kimasar Pass. If you prefer this option, you can drive or take public transport to the base of the mountains near Medeu. From there, follow local trails heading towards Kimasar Pass. Be sure to carry enough water, food, and a map, as the area may not have clear signage. The hike can take several hours, depending on your pace and the route you choose.
Use Kimasar Pass as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
