Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car within the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, start from the Bandy Creek Visitor Center. Head east on Bandy Creek Rd, then turn left onto US-27 S. Continue for approximately 12 miles. Turn right onto KY-92 W and follow it for about 6 miles. Look for Blue Heron Rd on your left. Follow Blue Heron Rd for about 2 miles until you reach the Blue Heron Mining Community. Parking is available on-site, but there may be a small fee for parking, so be prepared.

• Public Transportation

  Public transportation options are limited in the rural areas surrounding Big South Fork. If you are relying on public transport, you might need to take a Greyhound or local bus to Stearns, KY. From there, you will likely need to use a taxi or rideshare service, as there are no direct public transit routes to the Blue Heron Mining Community. Be sure to confirm the availability of taxis in advance, as they may not always be readily available. Costs will vary based on distance and availability.

• Biking

  For those who enjoy biking, you can rent a bike from local outfitters in the area. Starting from the Bandy Creek Visitor Center, follow the marked bike trails toward Blue Heron. The route will take you through scenic areas, but it is important to note that some roads may not be paved. The ride is approximately 10 miles and should take around an hour, depending on your pace. Make sure to wear a helmet and bring water along the journey.
