Getting There
Car
If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Mombasa. Take the A14 road heading north towards Malindi. Continue on the A14 for approximately 115 km until you reach Malindi. From Malindi, follow the signs to Lamu, which will take you to the C103 road. Drive along C103 for about 70 km until you reach the town of Mokowe. From Mokowe, you will need to park your car at the Mokowe Jetty. There are parking facilities available, and the cost is around 200 KES per day. Once you park, take a boat from Mokowe Jetty to Lamu Island. The boat ride costs approximately 300 KES and takes about 30 minutes. Upon arrival at Lamu Island, you can walk to Lamu Fort, which is located centrally in the town.
Public Transport (Bus)
For those using public transportation, you can catch a bus from Mombasa to Lamu. The buses leave from the Mombasa bus terminal and the journey takes around 6-8 hours. The fare is approximately 800-1000 KES. Once you arrive at Lamu town, the bus station is a short walk from the main area. From there, Lamu Fort is easily accessible on foot. Just ask locals for directions to the fort, as it is a well-known landmark.
Public Transport (Matatu)
Alternatively, if you prefer a quicker option, you can take a matatu (shared taxi) from Mombasa to Malindi. The matatus leave frequently from Mombasa and the fare is about 300 KES. After reaching Malindi, you can either take another matatu to Mokowe or take a taxi to Mokowe Jetty. The taxi fare from Malindi to Mokowe is around 1500 KES. Follow the instructions for the boat ride from Mokowe Jetty to Lamu Island as mentioned above.
