Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving to Hippo Point from Kisumu, head southeast on Kisumu - Kakamega Rd/A1. Continue on this road for about 6 kilometers until you reach the junction with the Kisumu - Maseno Rd. Turn left onto Kisumu - Maseno Rd and follow it for approximately 5 kilometers. Once you reach the Kisumu City Center, continue towards the lakeshore. Follow the signs to Hippo Point, which is located at the edge of Lake Victoria. There is no entry fee for the point, but ensure to check for any parking fees that may be applicable in the area.

• Public Transportation (Matatu)

  From Kisumu city center, you can take a matatu (shared minibus) heading towards the lakeshore or specifically to Hippo Point. Board a matatu from the main bus station and ask the driver to drop you off at Hippo Point. The fare is usually around 50-100 KES. Once you arrive at the drop-off point, follow the signs towards the lakeshore, which is about a 10-minute walk. Be sure to confirm with the driver that they stop at Hippo Point before boarding.

• Bicycle Rental

  For those looking for a more adventurous route, consider renting a bicycle in Kisumu. From the city center, head towards the lake via the Kisumu - Kakamega Rd/A1. The ride is approximately 7 kilometers and offers beautiful scenic views. Upon reaching Hippo Point, you can lock your bicycle at designated areas. Rentals typically cost around 500 KES for a few hours. Ensure you wear a helmet and follow local traffic rules for safety.

• Boat Ride

  If you are near the waterfront, you can also opt for a boat ride to reach Hippo Point. Various boat tour agencies operate in the area, offering rides across Lake Victoria. Prices for a short boat trip to Hippo Point start from approximately 300-500 KES per person, depending on the duration and the type of boat. It’s best to negotiate costs beforehand and ensure you have a life jacket.
