Car
If you are traveling by car within Mount Elgon National Park, start your journey from the park headquarters. Head northwest towards the Sironko road, following the signs that indicate Making'eny Caves. After approximately 15 kilometers, you will reach the junction that leads to the caves. Take the right fork and continue for another 5 kilometers. The caves will be clearly marked on your left. Ensure your vehicle is suitable for rough terrain as some roads may be unpaved.
Public Transportation
To reach Making'eny Caves using public transport, start at the nearest bus stop in Endebess. Board a matatu (shared taxi) heading towards Mt. Elgon National Park. Ensure you inform the driver of your destination. The journey should take approximately 30 minutes. Once you arrive at the park entrance, you will need to hire a local guide or arrange for a taxi to take you to the caves, which are about 20 kilometers from the entrance. The fare for the taxi ride should be negotiated beforehand, typically costing around 1000-1500 KES.
Hiking
For adventurous travelers, hiking is an option to reach Making'eny Caves. Starting from the park headquarters, follow the designated hiking trails. The trek will take about 4-5 hours and covers approximately 12 kilometers. Ensure you have proper hiking gear and sufficient water. It is advisable to hire a guide for safety and navigation assistance. The cost for a local guide is usually around 2000 KES for a full day.
