Car
If you're traveling by car, start from Nanyuki town. Take the A2 highway towards Nyeri. After approximately 25 km, turn onto the Kanyoni Road, which leads into the Mount Kenya National Park. Continue on this road for about 10 km until you reach the park entrance. There is an entrance fee of approximately 1,000 KES for Kenyan residents and 3,000 KES for non-residents. After passing through the entrance, follow the signs towards the Lake Ellis trailhead. The road may be rough, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Drive for another 12 km to reach the Lake Ellis parking area.
Public Transportation
To reach Lake Ellis using public transport, take a matatu (shared taxi) from Nanyuki to the Mount Kenya National Park entrance. The fare is around 200 KES. From the entrance, you can hire a local guide or ranger who can assist you in navigating the park roads to Lake Ellis. The cost for a guide varies but expect to pay approximately 1,500 KES for a half-day tour. The guide will also help with any park regulations and ensure your safety as you reach the lake.
Hiking
If you're feeling adventurous and prefer hiking, you can hike from the Lake Ellis trailhead after parking your car or with a guide. The hike is approximately 6 km and will take around 2-3 hours. Follow the marked trail, which leads through beautiful forested areas and open grasslands. Be sure to carry enough water, snacks, and a map. Hiking is best done in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
