Car
If you are traveling by car, you can easily navigate from the nearest major town, Nanyuki, to Mount Kenya. Start by heading east on the Nanyuki - Meru Road (A2). After approximately 20 kilometers, you will see signs for Mount Kenya National Park. Turn left onto the road leading to the park entrance. Please note there is an entrance fee of about $20 for non-residents. Once inside, follow the signs to the various campsites or the peak trailhead.
Public Transportation
To reach Mount Kenya using public transport, start from Nanyuki town. Head to the Nanyuki bus station and take a matatu (shared taxi) to the Mount Kenya National Park gate. The fare is approximately 200-300 Kenyan Shillings (around $2). Inform the driver you are going to the Mount Kenya gate. The journey takes about 30-45 minutes. Upon arrival, you can either walk to the trailhead or hire a local guide or porter for the trek, which might incur additional costs ranging from $25 to $50 depending on the services required.
Taxi
For a more convenient option, you can hire a taxi from Nanyuki to the Mount Kenya National Park entrance. This can cost around $30 to $50 depending on negotiations. The taxi will take you directly to the park entrance, where you will need to pay the park entry fee. It is advisable to arrange for the taxi to pick you up after your visit.
Walking
If you are already near the park entrance and prefer to walk, you can trek from Nanyuki to the park gate. It is about 15 kilometers and can take around 3-4 hours. Make sure to follow the main road until you reach the entrance. This option is free but be prepared with enough water and snacks for the journey.
