Car
If traveling by car, start from Kisumu city. Head southwest on the A1 road towards Homa Bay. Continue for about 70 kilometers until you reach Homa Bay town. From Homa Bay, take the B2 road towards Mbita, which is approximately 22 kilometers away. Once you arrive in Mbita, look for signs directing you to the Mbita Ferry. Take the ferry across to Rusinga Island. The ferry ride costs approximately 100-200 KES per person and operates regularly during the day. After disembarking, follow the main road on Rusinga Island, and you will find Rusinga Island Lodge located near the shores of Lake Victoria.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, start in Kisumu and board a matatu (shared taxi) heading to Homa Bay. The fare is around 150-300 KES, and the journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Once in Homa Bay, you will need to transfer to another matatu that goes to Mbita; this fare is approximately 50-100 KES and takes about 30 minutes. Upon reaching Mbita, find your way to the Mbita Ferry terminal, where you can board the ferry to Rusinga Island. The ferry ride will cost you 100-200 KES.
