Discover more about Wat Si Muang

Wat Si Muang, located in the heart of Vientiane, stands as the city's most revered temple, a spiritual sanctuary for locals seeking blessings, peace, and tranquility. Constructed in 1563 during the reign of King Setthathirath, the temple is steeped in history and legend. The temple's origins are rooted in the story of Si Muang, a young pregnant woman who sacrificed herself to appease angry spirits during the construction of Vientiane's sacred pillar. As the legend goes, when workers encountered an uncontrollable underground water source while digging the pillar's foundation, Si Muang bravely jumped into the hole. Miraculously, the hole filled, and a sacred pillar emerged. In honor of her sacrifice, the temple was named Wat Si Muang, and she became the city's guardian spirit. The temple is also known as the 'mother temple' of Vientiane.Inside the temple, visitors can admire the intricate Lao architecture, colorful decorations, and numerous Buddha statues. The temple complex covers over 2 hectares, encompassing a main hall for Buddha worship and an area dedicated to Mother Si Muang. A small statue of Si Muang can be found behind the main building, along with old bricks said to date back to her time. Wat Si Muang is also known for a pair of mysterious storks residing on a rock behind the rear hall; some believe they are connected to Si Muang's spirit or were sent by Buddha to watch over the temple.Visitors can participate in the Baci ceremony, a traditional Lao ritual where a monk ties white threads around the wrist to bring good luck and blessings. Wat Si Muang is a focal point of the That Luang Festival, which takes place in October or November.
