Ban Xang Hai, a village with a history dating back to 1363, is located a short distance from Luang Prabang on the banks of the Mekong River. Originally known as a pottery-making village, Ban Xang Hai's main industry shifted over time. Today, it's best known for the production of Lao-Lao, the traditional Lao rice whiskey.Visitors to Ban Xang Hai can witness the traditional methods of brewing and distilling rice wine, a process passed down through generations. Getting There
Car
From Luang Prabang, follow the main road north towards Pak Ou. Ban Xang Hai is approximately 25 km from Luang Prabang. The road is mostly paved but may be narrow and winding in some sections, so drive carefully. Look for signs directing you to Ban Xang Hai. Parking is available near the village entrance. Expect to pay around 5,000-10,000 LAK for parking.
Public Transport
Take a bus or minivan from Luang Prabang's Northern Bus Station towards Pak Ou. Ask the driver to stop at Ban Xang Hai. From the main road, it's a short walk to the village. The bus fare is approximately 20,000-30,000 LAK. Alternatively, hire a tuk-tuk from Luang Prabang for around 150,000-200,000 LAK for a round trip, including waiting time.
Boat
Many tours to the Pak Ou Caves include a stop at Ban Xang Hai. You can hire a private boat or join a group tour from Luang Prabang. The boat will dock directly at the village.
