Constructed in 1563 during the reign of King Setthathirath, it is built on the site of an older Khmer temple. The temple's name and significance are derived from the story of Si Muang, a pregnant woman who, according to legend, sacrificed herself to appease angry spirits during the construction of the city's central pillar.Si Muang volunteered to be buried alive when workers hit an uncontrollable underground water source while digging the hole for the pillar. Her sacrifice ensured the pillar's successful erection and established her as the city's guardian spirit. Today, the temple is also known as the 'mother temple' of Vientiane. The temple complex includes a main hall for Buddha worship and an area dedicated to Si Muang. The main hall is unique, divided into two chambers, with a stone resting on a cushion in the first chamber that visitors can try to lift three times to receive good luck. The temple grounds feature numerous Buddha statues, including a notable statue of Buddha under a Bodhi tree.
