That Ing Hang: Savannakhet's Sacred Stupa

That Ing Hang Stupa, a significant religious and historical site, stands as a testament to Laos' rich cultural heritage. Located approximately 13 kilometers northeast of Savannakhet, this 9-meter-high stupa is believed to have been constructed in 1560 by King Setthathirath on the site of a pre-existing Khmer temple. The stupa is thought to enshrine a sacred relic, either the Buddha's collarbone or spine, making it an important pilgrimage destination for Laotian and Thai Buddhists. The architecture of That Ing Hang reflects a blend of Lao and Khmer styles, showcasing intricate carvings and multiple ceremonial levels. The stupa features three terraced bases topped by a traditional Lao stupa and a gold umbrella weighing 40 baht (450g). Inside the lower section, a hollow chamber houses a collection of Buddha images, though women are traditionally not permitted to enter. The exterior walls are adorned with detailed stone inscriptions and carvings that combine Hindu and Buddhist architectural traditions.
