That Ing Hang: Savannakhet's Sacred Stupa

That Ing Hang Stupa, a significant religious and historical site, stands as a testament to Laos' rich cultural heritage. Located approximately 13 kilometers northeast of Savannakhet, this 9-meter-high stupa is believed to have been constructed in 1560 by King Setthathirath on the site of a pre-existing Khmer temple. The stupa is thought to enshrine a sacred relic, either the Buddha's collarbone or spine, making it an important pilgrimage destination for Laotian and Thai Buddhists.The architecture of That Ing Hang reflects a blend of Lao and Khmer styles, showcasing intricate carvings and multiple ceremonial levels. The stupa features three terraced bases topped by a traditional Lao stupa and a gold umbrella weighing 40 baht (450g). Inside the lower section, a hollow chamber houses a collection of Buddha images, though women are traditionally not permitted to enter. The exterior walls are adorned with detailed stone inscriptions and carvings that combine Hindu and Buddhist architectural traditions.Visitors can explore the stupa grounds, immersing themselves in the serene atmosphere and admiring the intricate details of the architecture. The annual That Ing Hang Festival, held on the full moon of the first lunar month, attracts many visitors. Modest dress is required, and women may be required to wear a traditional sarong before entering the temple grounds.
