Discover more about Xe Bang Fai Cave

Xe Bang Fai Cave is a remarkable natural wonder in the Hin Nam No National Protected Area, Khammouane Province. The cave has been carved out over millions of years by the Xe Bang Fai River, which still actively flows through it. This has created one of the world's largest active river cave passages, stretching over 6.4 kilometers. The cave's dimensions are truly impressive, with an average width of 76 meters and a height of 53 meters. In some sections, the cave expands to a staggering 200 meters wide and 120 meters high. Inside, visitors can marvel at the stunning stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and cave crystals that adorn the walls. One notable feature is a chamber that evokes the image of a Dragon Hatchery, leading to an elevated balcony with views of the massive opening. Local villagers have long held the cave in reverence, believing it to be the source of the Xe Bangfai River and home to a benevolent spirit. Traditionally known as Tham Khoun Xe, the cave was thought to be inhabited by a spirit that could assist those who entered. Visitors can take guided tours of the cave, traveling by boat along the river and walking through the large limestone chambers.
