Phou Khe: A Border Peak

Phou Khe, a mountain straddling the border of Nan Province, Thailand, and Sainyabuli Province, Laos, is a notable peak in Southeast Asia's Luang Prabang Range. Rising to a height of 2,079 meters (6,821 feet), it is one of the ultra-prominent peaks in the region, offering adventurous travelers a challenging yet rewarding hiking experience.The mountain is located at the eastern end of the Thai highlands and presents a unique opportunity to traverse landscapes shared by two countries. The ascent involves navigating through traditional farmland, crossing rivers, and traversing ridges. While the lower sections of the trail may have leeches, the panoramic views from the summit make the climb worthwhile.Reaching the peak involves a multi-stage journey, often starting from Nan in Thailand and proceeding through winding roads to reach trailheads. The final ascent requires a good level of fitness and can take around four hours. The summit offers views into both Laos and Thailand and is marked by an official border marker.
