Discover more about Kuang Si Waterfall

Kuang Si Falls, also known as Kuang Xi Falls or Tat Kuang Si Waterfalls, is a breathtaking natural landmark in Laos. The three-tiered waterfall is located approximately 29 kilometers south of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage city. The falls cascade down a steep hillside, creating shallow, turquoise pools perfect for swimming and relaxation. The main waterfall has a 60-meter drop, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of nature's power and beauty. The unique milky blue color of the water is due to the high concentration of calcium carbonate from the limestone rocks the water flows over. This mineral-rich water reflects light, creating the stunning pearlescent hue. The falls are surrounded by lush, green jungle, adding to the idyllic and serene atmosphere. According to local legend, the Kuang Si Falls were formed when a wise old man dug a hole, revealing the waters of the Nam Si. A golden deer then made its home under a rock at the falls, giving the site its name: "Kuang" meaning deer, and "Si" meaning to dig. While the large rock that the deer supposedly lived under was destroyed in an earthquake in 2001, the legend and beauty of the falls endure. Visitors can also explore the Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre, home to rescued Asiatic black bears. Operated by Free the Bears Organization, the sanctuary provides a safe and enriching environment for these animals.
