Si Phan Don, also known as the 4,000 Islands, is a riverine archipelago in the Mekong River in southern Laos. The area is characterized by a vast network of waterways, creating a landscape dotted with numerous islands, islets, and sandbars. The islands vary in size, with half being submerged when the Mekong River is in flood.Historically, Si Phan Don played a crucial role in regional trade and transportation due to its location on the Mekong River. During the French colonial period, the French constructed a railway and bridge to facilitate trade. While the railway is no longer in operation, remnants can still be seen.Today, Si Phan Don is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty. The islands offer a range of activities, including boat tours, kayaking, cycling, and exploring local villages and temples. Key attractions include the Khone Phapheng Falls, the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia by volume, and the chance to spot rare Irrawaddy dolphins. The main islands are Don Khong, Don Det, and Don Khon.

Public Transport
From Pakse, take a bus or minivan to Ban Nakasang, the gateway to Si Phan Don. Buses depart from the Pakse Southern Bus Terminal and the journey takes 2-3 hours. A bus ticket costs approximately 40,000-80,000 LAK. From Ban Nakasang, take a ferry to Don Det or Don Khon. The ferry costs 20,000-30,000 LAK and takes 10-20 minutes.
Walking
Once on Don Det or Don Khon, walking is a great way to explore the immediate area around your accommodation. The islands are relatively small and flat, making it easy to get around on foot. However, to reach more distant attractions, consider renting a bicycle.
Bicycle
Renting a bicycle is a popular and affordable way to explore Don Det and Don Khon. Numerous rental shops offer bicycles for around 10,000-25,000 LAK per day. Cycle along riverside pathways and through palm tree-lined lanes to discover the islands' attractions.
