Tham Jang, or Jang Cave, is a prominent historical and natural site located just southwest of Vang Vieng in Laos. Approached via a bridge over the Nam Song River followed by a series of steps, this cave holds a significant place in the region's history.In the early 19th century, Tham Jang served as a crucial bunker during the Chinese-Ho invasion, providing shelter for local villagers. Its elevated location offered a strategic vantage point, allowing residents to seek refuge within its chambers during times of turmoil. The cave's naturally cool interior also provided respite from the heat.Inside the cave, a spring is located approximately 50 meters from the entrance. The cave is well-lit and features stairs, making it relatively easy to explore. At the foot of the cave, crystal clear water flows out of the mountain and into the river, creating a picturesque scene. The water is known to berefreshingly cold.Today, Tham Jang is a popular destination for tourists. Visitors can explore the cave's interior, marvel at the stalactites and stalagmites, and enjoy panoramic views of Vang Vieng and the surrounding countryside from the viewpoint. The area around the cave also offers opportunities for swimming in the natural lagoon.

    Getting There

    Walking

    From Vang Vieng town center, head south following the Nam Song River road. Follow signs towards Jam Mee Guesthouse. Continue past the guesthouse until you reach the entrance of Vang Vieng Resort. Pay the bridge crossing fee (2,000 LAK) to cross the Nam Song River. After crossing the bridge, follow the path leading to the steps that ascend to Tham Jang. The walk from town center is approximately 20 minutes.

    Tuk-Tuk

    Hire a tuk-tuk from anywhere in Vang Vieng town. Negotiate the fare with the driver before starting your journey. The tuk-tuk will take you to the entrance of Vang Vieng Resort, where you'll need to pay a bridge crossing fee of 2,000 LAK per person to cross the Nam Song River. From there, follow the path to the steps leading up to Tham Jang.
