Discover more about Nam Phou Fountain

Nam Phou Fountain, located in the heart of Vientiane, has been a significant landmark since its construction during the French colonial period in the 1920s. Originally a public plaza and fresh market, the area has evolved over the decades, undergoing several renovations, with a major rebranding in 2009. Today, it serves as a popular gathering spot for both locals and tourists, surrounded by a variety of bars, cafes, and restaurants. Throughout its history, Nam Phou Fountain has been a witness to Vientiane's transformation. In 1975, a fountain was added, and a circular path was built around it. It officially became the Fountain Park in 2000. For years, it was a place where people gathered in the evenings. Although the fountain itself may not be the most impressive, especially during the day, the surrounding area offers a vibrant atmosphere, particularly at night when the fountain is illuminated with colorful lights and music. In the mid-2000s, the area around Nam Phou Fountain began to decline, leading to its privatization. A 30-year concession was granted to a developer who invested in improvements, including repairing the fountain, enhancing the lighting, and adding pathways, toilets, and restaurants. The square reopened in 2012 as the Mix Restaurant and was rebranded as Nam Phou Park in 2017, becoming a commercial venue with dining and entertainment options. However, in recent years, there have been concerns about the site's use, leading to the government's request to return it to public use. Today, Nam Phou Square has been renovated with green spaces and public seating.
