Discover more about Wat Si Muang

Wat Si Muang, located in the heart of Vientiane, is considered the city's most sacred temple and a vital center of spiritual life. Built in 1563 during the reign of King Setthathirath, its origins are rooted in a captivating legend. The temple's name honors Si Muang, a pregnant woman who, according to legend, sacrificed herself to appease angry spirits and ensure the city's prosperity. When construction workers encountered an uncontrollable underground water source while digging the hole for the sacred pillar, Si Muang volunteered to be buried alive, thus stopping the water and allowing the pillar to be erected. This pillar is believed to protect the city and its inhabitants. Today, Wat Si Muang is also known as the 'mother temple' of Vientiane. The temple complex encompasses a main Buddhist temple and an area dedicated to Si Muang. Visitors can admire numerous Buddha statues, including a Shakyamuni Buddha under a Bodhi tree, along with statues representing Si Muang's protection. The main temple features two halls: the front hall for the Baci ceremony, where monks tie threads on visitors' wrists for good luck, and the back hall, where the central stone column extends into the ground.Wat Si Muang is also known for a pair of mysterious storks residing on a rock behind the rear hall. Some believe the storks were sent by Buddha to watch over the temple, while others believe they carry Si Muang's spirit and only appear when the country is peaceful. The temple was built on the site of an older Khmer Hindu temple, and the pillar may have been part of that earlier structure. The temple is a focus of celebration during the annual That Luang Festival in October or November.
