Nestled in the tranquil Valgunde Parish, the Christmas Battle Museum stands as a powerful tribute to the Latvian Riflemen and other soldiers who fought on the Riga Front during World War I. Established in 2005, this open-air museum and exhibition space allows visitors to delve into the events surrounding the legendary Christmas Battles, a series of offensive operations launched by the Imperial Russian Army in the Jelgava area during the winter of 1916-1917.The museum's territory retains remnants of the unique field fortifications used during the Christmas Battles. A reconstructed fragment of the fortifications system, including a dugout and part of the first line of German defense – “The German Wall” – has been recreated in its original location, offering a tangible connection to the past. This “German Rampart” is a one-of-a-kind structure in the Baltic region.Inside the museum, the exhibition “The Christmas Battles of Latvian Riflemen” displays over 200 photographs, battle plans, and artifacts unearthed from the area, providing a fascinating historical account of the events. The indoor facility also features the largest battle site model in Latvia, depicting several square kilometers of territory with World War I fortifications where the Christmas Battles were fought.Visitors can explore the landscape with or without a guide, following a 7.2 km exploratory trail that starts and ends at the museum. The trail route, planned along the attack road of the 1st Latvian Riflemen Brigade on January 5, 1917, features informative boards in 13 locations, highlighting the uniqueness of the Christmas battle site preservation.
