Daugavas Loki Nature Park, established in 1990, safeguards the unique natural and cultural heritage of the ancient Daugava River valley between Krāslava and Naujene. The park's most distinctive feature is its eight scenic bends (or meanders), some of the oldest geological formations in Latvia, where the river maintains its natural course. These bends range from 4 to 6 kilometers in length, with only 2 to 3 kilometers separating them.The park is a haven for biodiversity, featuring mixed forests, wetlands, and diverse flora and fauna. It plays a crucial role in conserving endangered species. Visitors can enjoy hiking, bird watching, and boat tours. Several trails and pathways cater to different hiking experience levels.Daugavas Loki also holds significant cultural importance, with archaeological sites and ancient castle mounds that tell stories of Latvia's past. Notable sites include the Naujene Local History Museum, Slutišķi Old Believers' Village, and Dinaburga hiking trail. Observation towers like the Vasargelišķi Sightseeing Tower offer panoramic views of the river bends and surrounding landscapes.The park is part of the Augšdaugava protected landscape area, recognized as a NATURA 2000 territory in 2004, and included in the Latvian National UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011.
