Discover more about Latgale Zoo

Latgale Zoo, a municipal institution of Daugavpils, was established in 1992 with the goal of promoting ecological education, scientific research, and nature conservation. Despite its relatively small size, the zoo creates an immersive environment reminiscent of a tropical jungle, housing a variety of exotic animals. Visitors can observe monkeys, crocodiles, snakes, iguanas, turtles, and scorpions, among other creatures. The zoo also features pools with diverse fish species, offering visitors the chance to feed them. Unlike many zoos, Latgale Zoo focuses on animals that have lived alongside humans for generations, similar to pets, ensuring that no animals are caught in the wild for display. The zoo's biologists are actively involved in researching and conserving endangered Latvian species, such as the European pond turtle. The European Commission has recognized Latgale Zoo as an example of good practice in implementing the European Union Zoos Directive. In addition to its animal exhibits, the zoo features a hobbit house for insects and spiders and provides guided tours of the Latgales Wetland Biodiversity Park and Wetland Trail.
