Discover more about Martin-Luther’s Church in Daugavpils

Martin Luther Church, also known as Martin Luther Cathedral, is a prominent Evangelical Lutheran cathedral in Daugavpils, Latvia. Designed by Wilhelm Neumann, one of the city's most influential architects, the church was completed in 1893 in a distinctive red brick Neo-Gothic style. Its architecture features an asymmetrical planning and a single tower. The church is the seat of the Lutheran Bishop of Daugavpils. The church is located on Church Hill, where you can find churches of four different Christian denominations: Lutheran, Orthodox, Old Believers, and Catholic. Throughout its history, the cathedral has faced adversity. In 1941, the church suffered significant damage when its spire was burned down. Restoration efforts took place between 1941 and 1943, but the spire was rebuilt in an abbreviated form. During the Soviet era, the church was used as a warehouse and even a boxing school. In 1987, another fire caused further damage, destroying the tower and roof. In 1991, the church was returned to the community of believers, marking the beginning of a long reconstruction process. The spire was eventually restored to its original height of 52 meters, and bells were installed in the tower. Today, the cathedral hosts regular services, exhibitions, lectures, and seminars. Its excellent acoustics make it a popular venue for sacred music concerts. Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of Daugavpils Church Hill from the viewing platform located in the tower.
