The Memorial to the Fallen Sons of Latvia in the Afghan War, located in Daugavpils, stands as a poignant reminder of the human cost of the Afghanistan War (1979-1989). Created by Romualds Gibovskis and unveiled in 2017, the memorial is located in Cialkovska iela 3. The memorial features a split wall, symbolizing the disruption of life caused by war and death. On one side of the wall, nine silhouettes fade into eternity, representing the nine soldiers from Daugavpils and its surrounding region who never returned home. Nine bullet holes pierce the wall, signifying fatal wounds. At the base of the monument, nine shell casings serve as both a tribute and flower vases. During the Afghanistan War, 3,640 soldiers from Latvia were involved, with 63 losing their lives and 177 sustaining injuries. The memorial serves as a place for remembrance and reflection on the impact of the war on the community.
