Discover more about Līvu laukums

Līvu Square, located in the heart of Riga's Old Town, is a bustling center of activity and a testament to the city's rich history. Situated between Zirgu, Meistaru, and Kaļķu streets, the square's location was once the site of the Riga River, a vital shipping route for grain. Over time, the river narrowed and was called Rīdzene. Today, flower beds mimic the river's waves, a reminder of Riga's namesake. The square was created in 1950 after World War II, when buildings destroyed during the war were demolished. Initially named Philharmonic Square, it was later reconstructed in 1974. In February 2000, it was renamed Līvu Square, honoring the ancient Livonian people who once inhabited much of Latvia. Līvu Square is surrounded by architectural landmarks, including the Great and Small Guild Halls, the Cat House, and the Riga Russian Drama Theatre. In summer, the square comes alive with outdoor cafes, markets, and performances. During winter, it transforms into an ice skating rink. The square is a popular spot for cultural events and festivals throughout the year.
