Located near Valkas Street in Strenči, Latvia, the Memorial Site of 1941 Jewish Victims stands as a solemn reminder of the Holocaust. In August 1941, nine Jewish inhabitants of Strenči were brutally murdered in a nearby forest by the Nazis and local collaborators. This memorial, erected by the Council of Jewish Communities of Latvia in 2008, marks the site of this tragedy. Slightly later, approximately 20 Jewish patients and employees of the Strenči Psychiatric Neurological Hospital were murdered separately at the Gauja River. In 1960, the remains of those killed near Valka Street and at the Gauja River were reinterred in a cemetery of victims of fascism. The memorial invites visitors to learn about the history of the Jewish community in Strenči and reflect on the devastating consequences of intolerance and hatred. It serves as a place to pay respects to the victims and ensure that such atrocities are never forgotten.
