Discover more about Rathausplatz Riga

Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square) in Riga has been the center of activity in Riga’s medieval Old Town for centuries. Though the square and its surrounding buildings were destroyed during World War II, it has been completely rebuilt, allowing visitors to experience its historical significance anew. The square is framed by notable buildings, including the House of the Blackheads, a reconstructed building with an ornate facade dating back to the 14th century, the Riga City Hall, and the Roland Statue. The Roland Statue is a replica of the original, which was erected in 1897 and destroyed in WWII. Roland was the nephew of Charlemagne and a symbol of justice in Northern Germany. Rathausplatz has served many purposes throughout history, including as a marketplace, a site for celebrations and tournaments, and even a place of public execution. Today, it hosts various cultural events, festivals, and markets throughout the year, offering visitors a glimpse into local traditions. A memorial plank marks the spot where the city's first Christmas tree was lit and decorated 500 years ago; a new tree is decorated here every year. Visitors can explore nearby cobblestone streets with shops, galleries, and museums.
