Discover more about Art Nouveau building

Located on Alberta iela, in Riga's Central District, the building at number 13 is a prime representation of the city's Art Nouveau heritage. Designed by the architect Mikhail Eisenstein and built in 1904, this residential building showcases an eclectic and decorative style. Eisenstein, also responsible for other Art Nouveau buildings in Riga, created a facade adorned with sculptural reliefs, masks, dragons, and geometric figures. The building's features include female images, peacocks, knight's heads, and metal handrails with typical Art Nouveau line patterns. Alberta iela itself is renowned as Riga's Art Nouveau gem, with a high concentration of buildings erected between 1901 and 1908. These buildings reflect Riga's cultural and mercantile status at the turn of the 20th century. The area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After World War II, the building served as the headquarters for the Soviet border guard. In 1998, the Soros Foundation acquired the building and donated it to the Riga Graduate School of Law, leading to a careful restoration of its facades. Today, Alberta iela 13 stands as a testament to Riga's architectural heritage and a key attraction for visitors exploring the city's Art Nouveau district.
