The Memorial Site of 1941 Jewish Victims in Strenči stands as a somber reminder of the Holocaust in Latvia. In August 1941, the Nazi occupation led to the murder of approximately nine Jewish residents of Strenči in a forest near Valkas Street. Later, around 20 Jewish patients and employees of the Strenči Psychiatric Neurological Hospital were also shot at the Gauja River. The memorial site provides a space for quiet contemplation and remembrance. In 2008, a memorial stone was erected at the site of the forest murders by the Council of Jewish Communities of Latvia. The inscription on the stone in Latvian reads: “On 11 August 1941 in this forest the Nazis and their supporters shot 9 Jews from Strenči town: the family of L. Schubitz and dentist Gita Tafelstein with her family”. In 1960, the remains of those killed at both the forest and the river, along with other victims from the Strenči Psychiatric Neurological Hospital, were reinterred in a cemetery of victims of fascism. A monument was erected with the inscription “Eternal Remembrance to the Victims of Fascism. 1941–1944”. While concrete plaques with the names of the deceased were once present, they have not been preserved. The site serves as an educational resource, encouraging visitors to reflect on the importance of tolerance and humanity.
