The Memorial Site of 1941 Jewish Victims in Ābeļi, Jēkabpils Municipality, stands as a poignant reminder of the tragic events that unfolded during the Holocaust. This historical landmark commemorates the Jewish victims who lost their lives in 1941. The site serves as a space for reflection and remembrance, set against the tranquil backdrop of the Latvian countryside. During the Nazi occupation in July 1941, Jews from Jēkabpils were arrested and initially held in synagogues. Later that month, they were moved to Kūkas, approximately 15 km from Jēkabpils. On August 10th, members of the Arājs Commando, a Latvian SD unit, murdered approximately 418 Jews in the Kūkas Swamp. In 1958, the remains of those murdered in Kūkas, along with Jews from Viesīte and Nereta, were reinterred in the Old Jewish Cemetery in Jēkabpils. A monument was erected in 1959 with inscriptions in Russian and Yiddish. Visiting this memorial is not only about honoring the past but also acknowledging the importance of peace and tolerance in today's world. It serves as a reminder of the fragility of human rights and the necessity of standing against hatred and discrimination.
