Discover more about Raganu katls

Raganu Katls, translated as Witch's Cauldron, is a captivating geological formation located in the picturesque Gauja National Park near Sigulda, Latvia. This natural wonder is a large, bowl-shaped depression, a result of the suffosion processes of various water flows, creating a unique and dramatic landscape. From the valley side, it appears as a partially cleaved cylinder, approximately 30 meters high and 20 meters wide. The interior of Raganu Katls resembles a geological museum panorama, showcasing the rock bedding, layer structure, and color variations of the sandstone. The exposed sandstone reveals layers of the Gauja and Amata suites, interwoven with red clay deposits and aleurolite bands. A small, scenic cave is nestled at the base of the western edge, with a small stream flowing from it. Local legends add a mystical element to the site, with tales of witches gathering in the cauldron for their meetings, hence the name. Raganu Katls is also known as the filming location for the movie "The Cage," marked by a metal cage left in the sandstone. The top edge of Raganu Katls features small springs that merge to form a seasonal waterfall, and a stream flowing from the slope cuts through the outer edge of the cauldron, culminating in a roughly 2.7-meter-high waterfall. Visitors can explore the area via a nature trail that offers viewing points from the canyon's upper edge. While access to the bottom of the cauldron is restricted to preserve the natural environment, the panoramic views and the unique geological features make Raganu Katls a must-see destination for those exploring Latvia's natural wonders.
