Discover more about Biķernieki Memorial

The Biķernieki Memorial is located in the Biķernieki Forest, a place where over 35,000 people, including Latvian and Western European Jews, Soviet prisoners of war, and political opponents of the Nazis, were killed between 1941 and 1944. The memorial, opened in 2001, serves as a poignant reminder of the atrocities committed during the Holocaust. The memorial complex features two territories spanning over 80,000 square meters, encompassing 55 marked burial sites. At the heart of the memorial is a black granite cube, symbolizing an altar, inscribed with a verse from the Book of Job: "Earth, do not shield my blood or hide my cry!". Thousands of stones surround the cube, reminiscent of traditional Jewish burial grounds, with some stones bearing the names of European cities from which the victims were deported. Concrete pillars mark the entrances to the memorial and grave sites, adorned with symbols representing the different groups of victims: the Star of David for Jews, a crown of thorns for prisoners of war, and a Christian cross for civilians. The memorial's design is by Latvian architect Sergejs Rižs, who dedicated 15 years to the project, considering it his moral duty. The unique rough-hewn granite stones, sourced from the Zhytomyr region in Ukraine, add to the site's somber atmosphere. Despite the memorial's solemn nature, the surrounding forest remains a popular spot for hiking in the summer and sledding and skiing in the winter.
