Getting There

  • Walking

    From Sigulda town center, head towards Sigulda Castle. From there, follow the signs indicating the way to Raganu Katls. The walk is approximately 2 kilometers and takes around 25-30 minutes, offering scenic views of the area. Be prepared for some uphill sections.

  • Public Transport

    Take a bus from Riga to Sigulda. Buses depart frequently from the Riga Central Bus Station, and the journey takes about 1 hour. Once in Sigulda, walk towards Sigulda Castle, roughly 2 kilometers away. Follow the signs to Raganu Katls. Alternatively, take a taxi or ride-share service from Sigulda bus station to Raganu Katls, costing approximately €10-€15.

  • Car

    From Riga, take the A2 road towards Sigulda. After about 50 kilometers, you will reach Sigulda. Follow signs towards Sigulda Castle and continue on Pils iela for about 2 kilometers, then turn onto the road leading to Raganu Katls. Parking is available nearby, but parking fees may apply.

Raganu Katls, meaning Witches' Cauldron, is a remarkable natural formation located in the Nurmižu Ravine Reserve, near Sigulda. This geological wonder is a large, partially cut cylinder, approximately 30 meters high and 20 meters wide, formed by the erosive action of various watercourses. Its interior resembles a geological museum panorama, showcasing the rock bedding, layers, and color variations of the Gauja and Amata suites. Local legends tell that Raganu Katls was once a gathering place for witches, who would fly in on their broomsticks to practice their arts. Those who visit the cauldron are said to gain strength and courage, becoming immune to spells. The site is also known for being a filming location for the movie "Būris". Visitors can observe a small, scenic cave with a flowing stream at the base of the cauldron's western side. A seasonal waterfall cascades from the upper edge. Note that access to the cauldron's interior is prohibited as it is part of the Gauja National Park's nature reserve zone and can only be viewed from the canyon's upper viewpoint.
