Discover more about Ruins of the Livonian Order Castle

The Ruins of the Livonian Order Castle in Valmiera stand as a powerful reminder of the city's medieval past. Built in the 13th century by the Livonian Order, likely on the site of an ancient Latgalian fortification, the castle was strategically positioned on the right bank of the Gauja River. Its location provided natural defenses, with the steep riverbank and the deep ravine of the Rātsupīte stream protecting it from invaders. Throughout its history, the castle played a vital role in the region, hosting Landtags, which were assemblies of representatives from the Livonian Order states. These gatherings saw the making of important political decisions. However, the castle also faced numerous conflicts, suffering damage and destruction over the centuries. The most devastating blow came during the Great Northern War in 1702 when Russian troops attacked and burned it down. Following its destruction, the castle was used as a quarry by local residents seeking building materials. Today, only ruins remain, including sections of the southern and western walls, ramparts, and cellars. Visitors can explore the grounds, which also house the Valmiera Museum and an open-air stage that hosts concerts and events during the summer. From the castle hills, there are scenic views of the Gauja River and Valmiera's historical center. Even though time has passed, the ruins still whisper the tales of Valmiera's past. The site offers a unique blend of history and nature, where visitors can wander through the remnants of the castle and imagine life during the Livonian Order era.
