Discover more about Turaida Castle

Turaida Castle, meaning "Thor's Garden" in Livonian, is a captivating medieval castle in Latvia's Vidzeme region. Built in 1214 by Bishop Albert of Riga on the site of a former wooden Livonian castle, it initially was named Fredeland (“Peaceful Land”). The name Turaida, however, persisted. The castle served as an important economic center, a local administrator's residence, and a military stronghold for the Archbishopric of Riga. The castle's construction largely features the classic red-brick style of the Baltic crusading orders. Over the centuries, the castle faced numerous battles and a devastating fire in 1776, leading to its abandonment. However, extensive restoration efforts in the 20th century have revived the castle, allowing visitors to explore its well-preserved structures and original ruins.Today, Turaida Castle is part of the Turaida Museum Reserve, a 42-hectare area encompassing the castle and its surroundings. Visitors can explore the castle's towers, offering panoramic views of the Gauja River valley, and visit the museum within the castle's 15th-century granary, which showcases the history of the region. The Turaida Museum Reserve also includes a wooden church, the Rose of Turaida Memorial, and the Folk Song Garden. The castle grounds also include the legendary Turaida Rose grave, a memorial to a young woman named Maija who is the subject of a tragic legend. According to the legend, in 1601, after Swedish troops captured the Castle of Turaida, the palace scribe Greif found a starving girl among the dead and raised her. She became known as the Turaida Rose because of her beauty. The story tells of her tragic death.
