Discover more about Water Tower

The Āgenskalns Water Tower, located on Alīses iela 4 in Riga's Zemgale suburb, is a striking example of early 20th-century industrial architecture. Designed by the prolific architect Wilhelm Bockslaff and completed in 1910, the tower was built to address the city's increasing need for a reliable fresh water supply during a period of rapid population growth. The 40-meter-tall structure is characterized by its robust brick construction, with walls that are approximately 2 meters thick. Above the entrance, a stylized version of Riga's coat of arms is displayed. In 1937, the tower underwent significant reconstruction, which included elevating the roof by 7.5 meters to improve its water distribution capabilities. While no longer functioning as a water tower, the Āgenskalns Water Tower remains a notable landmark. From 1991 to 2010, its underground levels were used as a recording studio called 'Tornis'. Although various proposals have been made for its reuse, the tower has largely remained empty. The surrounding area provides a peaceful setting for appreciating the tower's architecture.
