Chateau Ksara: Lebanon's Oldest Winery

Chateau Ksara, a beacon of Lebanese winemaking, is located in the Bekaa Valley near Zahle. Founded in 1857 by Jesuit priests, it stands as Lebanon's oldest winery, blending a rich history with modern techniques. The story began when Jesuit monks inherited land and started planting vines, setting the stage for Lebanon's modern wine industry.A significant discovery in 1898 revealed Roman-era caves beneath the property, which now extend for two kilometers and are used as cellars. These caves provide the ideal temperature and humidity for aging wines. In 1972, the winery was sold to a local consortium who maintained the Jesuit heritage. Chateau Ksara produces approximately 3 million bottles annually, exporting to over 40 countries.Visitors can explore the vineyards, tour the Roman caves, and enjoy wine tasting sessions. The winery also features a restaurant where guests can savor Lebanese cuisine paired with Ksara wines. Chateau Ksara welcomes around 100,000 tourists each year and offers various tasting options to suit different palates.
