Shouf Biosphere Reserve - Park House

The Shouf Biosphere Reserve is a sprawling protected area in the heart of Lebanon, stretching across the Shouf mountains from Dahr Al-Baidar to Niha. Established in 1996 and declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2005, it stands as a testament to Lebanon's commitment to preserving its natural and cultural heritage. Covering approximately 5% of Lebanon's total area, the reserve encompasses diverse ecosystems, including the iconic cedar forests of Maasser Al-Shouf, Barouk, and Ain Zhalta-Bmohary, which hold a quarter of the country's remaining cedar trees. The Park House, located in the village of Maasser El Chouf, serves as the headquarters of the Shouf Biosphere Reserve. This restored Lebanese house offers visitor information, restrooms, a gift shop selling local organic products and souvenirs, and a bike rental station. It's the ideal starting point for exploring the reserve's numerous hiking trails, which cater to all fitness levels. From the summit of the rugged mountains, visitors are treated to panoramic views stretching eastward to the Beqaa Valley and westward to the Mediterranean Sea. The reserve is not only a haven for nature lovers but also a place of historical and cultural significance. The village of Maasser El Chouf itself boasts a rich history, with archaeological evidence dating back to the 5th century B.C.E. Under Ottoman rule, the village was known for its vineyards and silk production. Today, visitors can explore the village's traditional architecture, sample local wines, and experience Lebanese heritage. The Shouf Biosphere Reserve is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including medicinal plants, rare species, and large mammals such as wolves and wild cats. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the over 290 species of birds recorded in the reserve and the nearby Ammiq Wetland. The reserve also plays a vital role in environmental education and research, hosting students, scientists, and researchers from across Lebanon and the world.
