The Statue of Our Lady of Lebanon, also known as Notre Dame du Liban, is a significant religious and tourist destination located in Harissa, a mountain village 20 kilometers north of Beirut. Standing 650 meters (2,133 feet) above sea level, the shrine offers stunning views of Jounieh Bay and the surrounding landscape. The statue itself is made of bronze, stands 8.5 meters (28 feet) high, and is painted white to enhance its splendor. It was crafted in France and shipped to Lebanon in seven pieces before being assembled on a stone base. The base has a bottom perimeter of 64 meters and a height of 20 meters, making the entire monument visible from afar. The Virgin Mary extends her hands towards Beirut in a gesture of peace and blessing. The shrine's origins trace back to 1904 when the Maronite Patriarchate entrusted its administration to the Congregation of Maronite Lebanese Missionaries. The statue was erected in 1907 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Conception. The inauguration took place in 1908 and has since become a major pilgrimage destination for both Christians and Muslims. Beneath the statue is a small chapel, and nearby stands a modern Maronite cathedral constructed of concrete and glass. The site has been visited by prominent figures, including Pope John Paul II in 1997 and Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. Visitors can reach the statue by road or via a scenic cable car ride (Téléphérique) from Jounieh. The site is not only a religious symbol but also a place for quiet reflection and appreciation of Lebanon's beauty.
