Discover more about Rachaya Citadel (Citadel of Independence)

Perched atop a hill in the charming village of Rachaya, the Rachaya Citadel, or Citadel of Independence, stands as a proud sentinel of Lebanese history and heritage. This ancient fortress, with its rich past and stunning architecture, offers a captivating glimpse into Lebanon's diverse cultural tapestry. Originally built as a palace by the Shihab family in the 18th century, the citadel occupies a strategic position overlooking the Taim Valley. Its history is layered with influences from Canaanite, Greco-Roman, Arab, Crusader, and Ottoman rulers. The Shehab family refurbished the Feather Tower, initially built by Crusaders in 1172. The citadel gained particular prominence during Lebanon's struggle for independence from French colonial rule. In November 1943, French authorities imprisoned Lebanese national leaders within its walls, including Bechara El Khoury, Riad El-Solh, and Camille Chamoun. This act ignited national and international pressure, leading to their release and the declaration of Lebanese independence on November 22, 1943. Visitors can explore the well-preserved inner courtyards, chambers, and corridors that once housed soldiers and prisoners. The Lebanese Army is stationed at the Citadel and assigns a guide to show visitors around the vaulted chambers and rooms. The panoramic views from the citadel's elevated position are breathtaking, offering a sweeping vista of the surrounding countryside and the Anti-Lebanon mountains.
