Walking
The Old City of Safed is best explored on foot due to its narrow, winding streets and staircases. From Jerusalem Street, the main thoroughfare, descend into the Old City via the Olei Ha-Gardom stairway or Beit Yosef Alley. Be prepared for some uphill walking, as the city is situated on a hillside. Follow the signs to key attractions like the synagogues and the Artists' Quarter.
Public Transport
Safed is accessible by bus from major cities in Israel. From the central bus station, located at the entrance to Safed, you can take a local bus or taxi to the Old City. Bus lines #3, #4, #10, #11, #13, #6 & #7 will get you closer to the Old City. From the bus stops, follow the walking directions above. A single bus fare within the city costs approximately 6 NIS.
Taxi
Taxis are readily available in Safed and can take you to the edge of the Old City. From there, you'll need to walk the final distance due to the pedestrian-only nature of many streets. A short taxi ride from the central bus station or another point in Safed to the Old City typically costs 25-35 NIS. Be sure to agree on the fare with the driver beforehand, or ensure the meter is running.
